NFB Oklahoma BELL Academy
Braille Enrichment for Literacy and Learning
The NFB Oklahoma BELL Academy provides intensive Braille instruction to blind and low-vision children during the summer months. NFB Oklahoma BELL Academy serves students who are not currently receiving enough Braille instruction in school or who could benefit from Braille enrichment over the summer and is modeled after the successful 2008 BELL Program led by the NFB of Maryland which has grown over the years and served students in twenty-five states in 2015.
The 2016 NFB Oklahoma BELL Academy was held in June, 2016. Students worked on Braille, technology and non-visual skills through a variety of activities. Students practiced non-visual pouring and measuring techniques while making their own scented play dough. They played games using Braille playing cards. Students were introduced to assistive technology products including iPads and Macs with VoiceOver, several refreshable Braille displays, Braille note taking devices and the iBill talking money identifier. The students also enjoyed field trips to Andy Alligator’s Fun Park and the Oklahoma Library for the Blind.
NFB Oklahoma wishes to thank all our sponsors and volunteers who helped make the 2016 NFB Oklahoma BELL Academy a success. Plans are underway for our 2017 BELL Academy. Updates will be posted as information becomes available.
